Several parents received a first-hand reminder of safety rules during the first day of school, with numerous tickets handed out and several warnings issued by city bylaw officers and police.

On Tuesday, bylaw enforcement officers focused their attention on two school areas as part of the annual Safety Over Convenience program –

Ken Danby Public School and neighbouring Holy Trinity Catholic School on Grange Road, along with Mitchell Woods Public School on Willow Road.

As a result, 13 tickets were issued for vehicles found in no stopping zones, with one ticket handed out for parking within an intersection obstructing sightlines.

“While the ticket numbers may be slightly higher, they are fairly consistent with past years,” said Doug Godfrey, the city’s general manager of operations, in an email. “In addition to the tickets, staff issued a number of verbal warnings and three written warnings.”

On Wednesday, Guelph police received six complaints of drivers disregarding adult crossing guards, a news release states.

“The Highway Traffic Act requires drivers to wait until all pedestrians, including adult crossing guards, have fully cleared the road before proceeding through an intersection or pedestrian crossover,” the release said. “Officers will be attempting to follow up with the subjects of the complaints to educate them on the rules of the road.”
