There were 715 applicants for 603 new French immersion spots in the Upper Grand District School board for next year.

The school board said in a news release that there were 10 schools over the enrolment cap and four schools at or below the enrolment cap.

A random selection process was initiated for the 10 schools above the cap and families were notified by email on Feb. 28 as to whether their child got one of the spots.

Registration occurred from Jan. 9 to Jan. 26.

Beginning in September French immersion students can only start in junior kindergarten and the school board has been going through the process of how to allot a limited number of spots.

In total, 46 per cent of those registering had a sibling already in French immersion.

A staff report also outlined the challenges of finding qualified French teachers and actions taken to meet these challenges.

It also outlined the possibility of creating regional holding sites for the 2017-18 year, determining that Willow Road PS in Guelph and Parkinson Centennial PS in Dufferin are feasible as one-year holding sites, beginning in September 2017.
