Skills Ontario is working towards preparing the province for the expected skilled trades shortage – by encouraging students to pursue a career in the skilled trades and technologies.

One of the ways Skills Ontario promotes opportunities to the next generation of skilled workers is through the Skills Ontario Summer Camps program, a week-long day program for students entering grades 7-9.

This summer, nearly 400 students across the province will begin exploring future career options in the skilled trades and technologies at Skills Ontario Summer Camps.

Held at 26 locations across Ontario, each camp hosts a range of hands-on workshops, depending on the specialization of the host college or industry facility, allowing for unique sets of experiences across the province.

Workshops at the camps can include construction, heavy equipment service, GIS and horticulture, LEGO robotics, culinary arts, aviation, and more! Each camp also features games and entrepreneurship activities.

“The Skills Ontario Camps aim to inspire the next generation of skilled trade and technology professionals,” says Karen Throupe, Summer Camp Manager at Skills Ontario. “Through fun, hands-on activities this program provides an opportunity for young people to explore a range of viable career options, to become aware of the apprenticeship pathway and the relevant courses they can take in high school, and to recognize how vital employability skills are to their future success.”

Skills Ontario Summer Camps are hosted in partnership with Magna International, Hydro One, the Government of Ontario, and many local colleges and other industry organizations, whose investment in these camps show their dedication to skill development for youth in Ontario.

Once again this summer, Skills Ontario is pleased to offer All-Girls’ and All-Boys’ camps, as well as a Francophone camp in Sudbury at Collège Boréal.
