St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Guelph is hosting a hiring drive following an anticipated rise in healthcare demands because of the pandemic.

The facility s looking to hire 10 to 20 more registered nurses, registered practical nurses and personal support workers.

Those who are hired will be expected to start right away after completing orientation and the onboarding process.

Tanya Tomasino, a communications specialist at St. Joseph’s, says they are projecting a rise in COVID cases, leading to an increased demand for healthcare services.

“The intent of this hiring drive is to make sure we are prepared to meet the coming need of our community.” says Tomasino.

“We anticipate a need for more staff. So we’re being proactive and getting ahead of the pandemic so we can support our workforce.”

This is the second hiring drive St. Joseph’s has hosted this year in response to the pandemic.

A broader recruitment event was held back in the spring and hired 72 healthcare workers, which included nurses, PSWs, food service and environmental workers.

Although they are looking to hire more workers, Tomasino says this does not mean that St. Joseph’s is suffering from a staff shortage. Currently, 704 employees work at SJHCG.

“I want that to be very, very clear, we are not experiencing a hiring shortage.” she says, “We are hiring proactively based on our projected need.”

For the campaign, Tomasino says St. Joseph’s is looking for individuals who embody the organization’s values of compassion, accountability, respect and excellence.

She adds the organization does not expect to experience any issues finding people to fill these roles.

“St. Joseph’s is an excellent place to work, it’s an excellent employer and we really are an integral part of this community in Guelph, and more broadly, in Wellington.”
