City officials have reduced the number of preschool programs offered at recreation centres this fall, though more drop-in programs are to be provided as a result.

“We know it’s disappointing for some, but we don’t have the staff we need to run these programs this fall,” Danna Evans, the city’s manager of culture and recreation, said via email. “We have always offered several drop-in preschool programs, and we’re offering even more this fall to make up for the registered preschool programs that we’re unable to run.

“There are less staffing resources needed in the coordination and operation of this type of program.”

Asked for examples of the eliminated programs, Evans listed Kids In Motion Dance, Amazing Art and Little Sport Stars.

“With drop-in programs continuing, dance, music and participation in sport will still be available,” Evans added. “Although not as specific, drop-in programs still offer great variety of different activities, experiences and learning for little ones.”

The spring session saw nearly 150 registrants for preschool programs, though that number doesn’t reflect the number of unique participants as some signed up for more than one program.

Evans said efforts are underway to “return to regular registered preschool programming” for the winter session, which begins in January.
