The Guelph Police Services Board (GPSB) have named former inspector Steve Gill as the new Deputy Chief of Police.

Gill was promoted because of his “varied experience, education, and expertise,” GPSB chair Peter McSherry said in a press release.

Gill is a long-time resident of Guelph, and joined the Guelph Police Service in 2001 after more than four years with the Toronto Police.

He has a degree in sociology from the University of Guelph, and a certificate in police leadership from Dalhousie University. He also completed multiple leadership courses including the international chiefs of police leadership course and Cambridge University’s equity, diversity and inclusion for business course.

Throughout his career, he’s worked in a number of roles, including frontline patrol, detective constable, sergeant of uniform patrol and communications, and staff sergeant in uniform patrol.

As inspector, he oversaw investigative services, including a large team of criminal investigators and civilian support staff in drug enforcement, intelligence, the special victims unit and major crimes investigations.

Gill will act as the second Deputy Chief of Police alongside Daryl Goetz. The budget for the second position was approved in the 2022-2023 budget process.

Gill will begin his role as Deputy Chief Designate on April 3.
