Spring may have finally arrived

ORILLIA — The days ahead and the long awaited return of warmer weather will certainly make these past few weeks of what included weather warnings, alerts and snowstorms seem like a distant thing of the past.

The double digit forecast will no doubt have people heading outdoors to enjoy the weather and traveling our roadways and trails.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to the residents of Central Ontario to be remember that Spring has only just begun.

Spring though, has statistically seen a significant increase in motor vehicle collisions that have resulted in injuries and fatalities.

The causal factors that the OPP consistently look to when analyzing post collision data have been a re-occurring theme, in many of the recent investigated collisions.

Distracted driving, seatbelt non-compliance and alcohol related offences have no place on our roads.

Many of the collisions police investigate are preventable, provided driver behaviour changes.

In the coming days we will see a marked increase in the volume of traffic as people are heading into seasonal homes in preparation for the upcoming season.

Motorcycle enthusiasts will also be hoping to get their first ride in of the year, but caution again should be exercised as the roads still have sand on them.

Chief Superintendent Angie Howe Interim Regional Commander - OPP Central Region states “Road safety is a shared responsibility and we are asking all motorists to drive cautiously and make safety a key part of your travel planning”.

OPP officers remain dedicated to road, water and trail safety throughout Ontario and will continue to make safety a priority during this Spring season.
