University of Guelph move-in day sees 3,000 first-year students move in to residence

Lots of tears, nervous smiles and small refrigerators descended on the University of Guelph campus Saturday as first year students moved into residence.

An estimated 3,000 students moved in on Saturday with the help of hundreds of volunteers aided by moderate and sunny temperatures.

Another 1,000 had moved in the day before, with the school's incoming class being around 4,200.

"It's bittersweet," admitted Rhonda Mills-Vissers as she and husband Richard dropped off their daughter Sophia at South Residence.

Sunday they were repeating the scene with her twin sister Kate at Trent University in Peterborough.

The Newmarket family was parting ways for the first time, with Sophia getting ready to study fine art at the U of G.

"There's a little nerves and there's a little excitement, but we're ready," Mills-Vissers said.

Rae Belford of Wasaga Beach was on hand helping grandson Jordyn Gallardo move in. He'll be studying psychology and environmental studies.

"He's nervous, but I am too," said Belford. "This is our youngest grandson. There's been a few tears already."

Classes commence Thursday.
