A local road has gained a new title as one of Ontario’s worst roads.

On Thursday, the CAA released the results of their CAA Worst Roads campaign, which featured 117 roads from municipalities across the province.

The results for 2021 were divided into regions listing the top five worst roads within that area. Guelph was placed in Western Ontario along with communities like Brant, Huron, Middlesex, Norfolk, Oxford, Perth County, Waterloo Region and more.

For Western Ontario, York Road ranked number one as the worst road, followed by Colborne St. N. in Simcoe and King St. E. in Kitchener.

However, while Guelph took one of the top spots regionally, it did not make it on the overall top 10 list of Ontario’s Worst Roads for 2021. The road chosen as the worst road provincially was Victoria Road in Prince Edward County.

A release from the CAA says the campaign is a platform for Ontarians to make roads safer by helping municipal and provincial governments understand what roadway improvements are important to citizens and where they need to be made. Ontario's top 10 list is verified by the Ontario Road Builders’ Association.

While a majority of the votes came from drivers, a quarter of votes also came from cyclists and pedestrians.

The release says voters shared their primary reasons for selecting a road, with 81 per cent citing potholes or crumbling pavement, followed by traffic congestion (11 per cent) and no or poor walking infrastructure (7 per cent).

Due to the pandemic, there are no results for Ontario’s Worst Roads in 2020.
