It was the kind of stuff they make movies out of.
A muddlng regular season took a sudden shift when the Guelph Storm made some huge trades just before the deadline. Then it was game on.
Time and time again the Guelph Storm looked like they were done, time and time again they rallied and beat the odds, capturing their first OHL championship since 2014 and earning a trip to the Memorial Cup in Halifax.
After polishing off Kitchener easily in the first round, they fell down 3-0 to the London Knights before rallyin to win the series, then 2-0 to both the Saginaw Spirit and Ottawa 67's before rallying once more to move on.
"Holy Jesus," said a jubilant Storm captain Isaac Ratcliffe amidst the post-game chaos as the Storm downed the Ottawa 8-3 in the deciding game at the Sleeman Centre.
"Four years later we're here. I can't believe we did it on home ice in front of our fans. They mean everything to us, we're so excited right now."It's indescribable. Looking around at all the fans sticking around to watch us hoist the cup. All our families sitting on the ice here. It's indescribable how good I feel right now."
Guelph headed to Halifax, winning two of three round-robin games before falling to the Halifax Mooseheads in the semifinal.
It might not have been the destination they hoped for, but you sure couldn't complain about the journey.
