It was the most read locally-produced story on GuelphToday this year: almost 40,000 pageviews on a whimsical story about a local Tim Hortons employee going the extra mile to make people's day a little brighter.
Damien Smith is his name and anyone that frequents the Tim Horton's on Wellington Street knows him.
Smith said he began going the extra mile when his uplifting attitude made someone having a bad day cry.
“They came up to me and they looked at me at the window and they looked like they were crying. For a second I was like ‘oh no what did I do?’ They said, ‘I've had the worst day of my life, and you really brought it up, so thank you very much.’” says Smith.
“It was kind of a cementing point for me like ‘okay this was fun before, but now this is something that I am going to keep doing.”
Funny voices, words of encouragement, jokes, all flow freely when Smith is on the drive-thru window.
The always-positive Smith has worked for Tim Hortons for a decade.
“You never see him in a bad mood. Never ever,” said manager Cindy Fox.
