Never has a parking garage opened with so much fanfare.

On Oct. 26 there were speeches from dignitaries, musicians entertaining the crowd, children's activities and free coffee and cupcakes: all for a four-storey brick and cement building known as the Market Parkade on Wilson Street.

Guelph long-awaited new downtown parking garage was a reality, coming in at a budget of $22 million.

A total of 496 new parking spots to help downtown merchants attract customers and help address the backlog of people who work downtown who need monthly parking spots.

It was the first public parking garage built in Guelph in 30 years.

“It is a little bit quirky, Guelphy, I don’t know what it is to be at a celebration for the opening of a parking garage,” Marty Williams, executive director of the Downtown Guelph Business Association told the 150 people who gathered for the ribbon cutting.

“I wonder if we Googled that there would be any others in the world, but we don’t care. We don’t care because this is Guelph.”
