The field is set for the 2018 municipal election.

The deadline for registering to run was 2 p.m. Friday and a total of 37 individuals have signed up to run in the Oct. 22 election.

There are two people running for mayor, Cam Guthrie and Aggie Mlynarz, and 35 people running for the 12 council seats in the city’s six wards.

Two members of the current council have chosen not to run: Karl Wettstein in Ward 6 and Andy Van Hellemond in Ward 2.

Van Hellemond initially registered to run but withdrew his name on Friday.

“In my 70 years I've never quit anything. Yet it's important to know when to pass the torch,” Van Hellemond said in an email to GuelphToday.

“As I look back over the past eight years I am proud of my involvement in several projects. The Wilson farm house, acknowledging and addressing the issues with District Energy, the renovations of Victoria Road Recreation Centre, the commitment to a new downtown library within the Baker Street District  and additional parking, merging with Alectra and although no small task, getting our finances in order.”

Van Hellemond acknowledged mayor and former councillors Gloria Kovach and Jim Furfaro for their guidance and support.

“Our city is in good hands with Cam and it makes it easier to step away knowing that the city is on the right track,” Van Hellemond said.

He threw his support in Ward 2 behind first-time candidates Jonathan Knowles and Dorothe Fair.

“While I won't be on the ballot in October, I'll continue to support leaders who manage our tax dollars on needs, not impractical wants,” he concluded.

Two former members of council are running again: Peter Hamtak in Ward 4 and Lise Burcher in Ward 6.

A total of 21 people have registered to run for Upper Grand District School Board trustee and six for the Wellington Catholic School Board.

In the 2014 municipal election there were a total of 44 people in the running for council, including seven for mayor.
