SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS UNIT
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the serious injury suffered by a 43-year-old man overnight in Centre Wellington.
Preliminary information suggests the following:
- Shortly after midnight on March 22, 2023, officers with the Halton Regional Police Service attempted to stop a black Chrysler 300 that had committed traffic infractions in another jurisdiction. The attempt was unsuccessful, and the officers disengaged.
- When the vehicle entered into Wellington County, Ontario Provincial Police officers attempted to stop the vehicle.
- At approximately 1:45 a.m., in the area of Wellington Road 18 and 4 Line, the vehicle left the roadway and entered into a ditch.
- The driver was transported to hospital where he was diagnosed with a serious injury.
Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

OPP West Region said in a Twitter post the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate as a result of an incident near Fourth Line Wellington OPP responded to early Wednesday morning.
The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency in Ontario that has jurisdiction over municipal, regional and provincial police officers, as well as special constables employed by the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service. Anyone the SIU is mandated to investigate is referred to as an ‘official’. The SIU Director may cause a criminal investigation to be conducted into any incident in which any of the following occurs, if the incident may have resulted from criminal conduct by an official:
- The death of a person.
- The serious injury of a person.
- The discharge of a firearm at a person.
- The sexual assault of a person, as reported by the person.

CENTRE WELLINGTON – Police have closed two roads between Fergus and Belwood for a collision investigation.
Wellington OPP closed Wellington Road 18 between Fifth Line and Third Line, as well as Fourth Line between Wellington Road 18 and Eramosa-Garafaxa Townline shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Media relations officer Nicholas Wilson said in an email units are on scene continuing an investigation from night shift involving a collision.
No other details were available at this time.
