The University of Guelph will not disclose what disciplinary action, if any, will be applied to a recently-suspended professor.

Lori Bona Hunt, communications and public affairs for U of G, said the investigation into the an exchange between a student and faculty member was headed by the college dean and the assistant vice president for faculty and academic staff relations.

The process is ongoing, said Bona Hunt.

So far, the review has involved interviews conducted with the faculty member, students in the class, graduate teaching assistants, representatives of Student Accessibility Services, the student, the educational assistant, faculty associated with the course and the chair of the academic unit responsible for the course..

Under the collective agreement, disciplinary measures the university may take against a member include a written warning or reprimand, suspension with pay, suspension without pay or dismissal for cause.

“We would not disclose specific actions taken,” said Bona Hunt.

Under the collective agreement, faculty may be suspended with or without pay. It is not immediately clear which applies in this case.

Earlier this month, professor Ed Hedican was placed on leave after an incident in which hundreds of students left class.

Several students reported that Hedican made inappropriate comments to a student and his educational assistant during a class.

Hedican, who teaches sociology and anthropology at the U of G, was filling in for the course’s regular teacher.
