The University of Guelph has joined other universities in announcing it will delay the return to in-class learning following the winter break.

"Winter semester classes will begin as scheduled Jan. 10, 2022. However, we are asking instructors to hold classes virtually for the first two weeks, with limited exceptions such as clinical teaching," said a statement on the U of G web site signed by vice-presidents Gwen Chapman and Sharmilla Rasheed.

"This change aligns with advice from Ontario’s chief medical officer and with actions taken by nearby universities. A remote start to the semester will allow as many members of our U of G community as possible to get their third vaccine before physically returning to campus, which is important as vaccination continues to be the best way to reduce the severe health effects of COVID-19 and variants of concern."

Following the remote two-week start the plan is to return to in-person delivery in those courses scheduled to be delivered in that format beginning Jan. 24.

Exams will wrap up this week as planned, including the half that were planned to be done in-person.

Residences will be open for those staying in them on Jan. 8 following the break, but the school asks that when possible students refrain from returning to their residence until Jan. 24.

They also encourage students to get their third dose of vaccine.

"We encourage you to get your third shot as soon as you are eligible. The province is expected to increase vaccine availability. Please explore options from your local public health unit and pharmacy. The University will hold vaccination clinics for eligible U of G community members in December, January and February; you can find information and details online or call 519-824-4120, Ext. 52131, to book an appointment."
