The COVID-19 pandemic may have impacted its numbers, but campus police at the University of Guelph were still busy.

Liquor offences and bicycle thefts are two of the areas seeing spikes, says the annual report of the U of G's Campus Safety Office.

The report will be presented at the Guelph Police Services Board meeting Thursday.

Despite some activity returning to campus in 2021-22, things looked similar on campus compared to the 2020-21 year, where the campus was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, liquor offenses and bicycle thefts were among numbers exceeding pre-pandemic levels.

For the purposes of comparisons, we will compare the most recent report to the pre-pandemic 2019-20 school year.

The most notable would be in liquor offenses, which spiked to 100 between May 1, 2021 and April 30, 2022. That's compared to 32 in 2020-21 and 19 in 2019-20.

Bicycle thefts also doubled from the 2019-20 year, going from 34 to 62.

There were more traffic stops, mental health calls and fire alarm calls. Disturbance reports are back around pre-pandemic levels, as was criminal harassment calls.

There were less proactive patrols in 2021-22, going from 5,140 the previous year to 3,392.

There were 27 criminal code charges, all laid on non-students.

Overall, dispatch received 10,816 calls in 2021-22, up slightly from 10,585 in 2020-21 and down from 15,253 in 2019-20.
