One of Guelph's most popular walking spots will remain open. For now.

The trails at the University of Guelph's Arboretum will remain open, although all buildings are closed.

"At this time, the Arboretum buildings are all closed to the public. The grounds remain open from dawn to dusk, and strict social distancing measures are in effect," said Arboretum director Justine Richardson.

"This situation is evolving rapidly and may change."

The Grand River Conservation Authority announced on Sunday that it was closing all its parks to the public for the time being.

Richardson said the Arboretum is following public health recommendations about social distancing while also maintaining connections to nature "which are so important to physical and mental health."

"The Arboretum grounds are still open at this time, from dawn to dusk. We strongly urge people to follow recommendations from public health about social distancing by ensuring two metres of space between themselves and others when getting out in nature.

"The dedicated Arboretum staff members who care for our living collections have implemented a variety of social distancing measures so that they can safely continue to maintain our plants and gene banks."

The Arboretum's naturalist interpretation team are taking to social media, especially Facebook and Instagram, with scavenger hunts and activities that people can do on their own outside, Richardson said.

"They are working on a plan to bring some online walks to people who must stay inside."
