After receiving public feedback regarding the lack of a consolidated Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 French immersion (FI) program in west Guelph, staff at the Upper Grand District School Board are asking for a program review.

In the 2017 review process, the confirmed FI program included Junior Kindergarten to Grade 3 FI classes from Gateway Drive Public School and it included Grade 4 to Grade 8 FI classes from Willow Road Public School.

In the fall of 2018, Gateway Drive Public School began accommodating Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten classes and grew by a grade each year.

The first year that FI students will leave Gateway Drive Public School and feed to Willow Road Public School is 2023/2024 for (Grades 4 and Grade 5).

A report going to the board meeting on Tuesday is asking for a study to determining the feasibility of creating a consolidated FI program in West Guelph.

The report states that the feasibility study is a staff-driven process and not a public consultation process.

The outcome of the process will be posted on the board and the appropriate school website.

The report states that the study will present information on regular track, FI enrolments and school capacities in west Guelph to determine the feasibility of a consolidated FI program in west Guelph.

Future changes to the FI program, location or boundaries in west Guelph are only possible through a board review and so the feasibility study will not result in a change to any existing west Guelph programs.

The report states that the intended completion for the FI feasibility study is early in the 2021/22 school year.
