WATCH: Local journalism 'means everything,' Peter Mansbridge says

A recent guest on Village Media's 'Up Close & Personal' interview series, the former anchor of CBC's The National talks about the critical importance of local news

Long before he was the news anchor of CBC's The National, Peter Mansbridge was a junior reporter in small-town Churchill, Manitoba. He learned very quickly why local journalism is so critical.

"How important is local [news]? It means everything," said the veteran broadcaster, during a recent appearance on Village Media's Up Close & Personal interview series. "If you don't have journalists asking the questions and reporting what they get as answers, you're going to have an ill-informed public."

Mansbridge specifically commended the work of Village Media, which operates an expanding networking of local news websites across Ontario — including this one.

"I applaud operations like yours that ensure that local coverage is still there," he said.
