WELLINGTON CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

Minister of Education Mitzie Hunter recently announced that Ontario’s five-year high school graduation rate has increased to 86.5 per cent - up more than 18 percentage points compared to the 2004 rate of 68 per cent.

The four-year graduation rate is 79.6 per cent. The graduation rates for Wellington Catholic District School Board are well above the provincial average.

“Our excellent, upward trending results are a testament to the focused work of staff and our commitment to success for all students. We are very proud of our students who demonstrate grit and perseverance in achieving their goals,” commented Tamara Nugent, Director of Education.

For the third year in a row, the Ministry has released a summary of graduation rates for students who entered grade 9 in any provincially funded school in the 2011- 2012 school year. The report outlines four and five-year cohort graduation rates for all school boards in the Province.

Wellington Catholic has a four-year graduation rate of 87.0 per cent and a five-year graduation rate of 92.3 per cent. Both of these rates are well above the provincial average and increased by 2 per cent from last year.

“We know that success is unique to each student and it is our mission to help each student achieve that success,” reflected Brian Capovilla, Superintendent of Education. “Doing so requires close monitoring of student progress at the classroom, school, and district levels and responsive interventions. We are very proud of our students and the learning conditions created by our staff to ensure a safe, inclusive and engaging learning environment.”

Madison Hooper, a student at St John Bosco Catholic High School, exemplifies what those conditions look like. The programming at the school is highly specialized and individualized to promote high levels of student success.

“St. John Bosco has saved my life. I didn’t even think it was possible for me to graduate. This school takes the time to identify your strengths and needs, and they program based on this. They really focus on every single student and no one gets left out. The staff is very involved. It’s amazing!”
