NEWS RELEASE

CITY OF GUELPH

The pool at Guelph’s West End Community Centre will close for eight weeks, beginning Monday, August 28, to allow for maintenance work to be done.

During the closure, patrons can access swimming lessons and recreational and fitness swim programs at Centennial Pool and Victoria Road Recreation Centre. Fall swimming lessons at the West End Community Centre will start the week of Oct. 22.

The annual maintenance shutdown, which is typically two weeks in length, generally includes draining the pool, cleaning, painting, tile repairs, and electrical and lighting upgrades. However, this year the pool will be closed for longer for regrouting of the tiles.

In addition, work will take place in the change rooms. New lockers will be installed and the concrete block partition walls in the pool and ice rink change rooms will be reinforced with additional steel supports.

The latter work fulfills a structural engineer’s recommendation from a recent audit of the community centre. Structural audits are done every five years on the City’s recreational facilities.

The work, which is expected to cost $585,000 and is funded through the 2017 approved budget, will be done by Ritestart Limited.

The pool is expected to reopen on Sunday, Oct. 22.
