Who are Guelph's highest paid public sector employees?

Five of the top earners on this year's Sunshine List were on the U of G payroll

A number of familiar faces kept their places among the highest-paid public sector earners in Guelph last year.

Of the top earners, half were on the U of G payroll.

Current University of Guelph president Charlotte Yates topped the list with an annual salary of $423,648.06 and a taxable benefit of $9,072.25, followed by past U of G president Franco Vaccarino who earned $393,648.06 with no taxable benefit and Dr. Nicola Mercer, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph medical officer of health who took home $378,481.89 with a taxable benefit of $5,529.20.

Vaccarino received payment for a period following his retirement.

The region's other top earners were:

  • The late Martha Rogers, director of education with the Upper Grand District School Board made $353,434.45 with a taxable benefit of $86.71.
  • Marianne Walker, Guelph General Hospital president and chief executive officer, took home $343,865.39 with a taxable benefit of $982.23
  • Lysa Porth, University Of Guelph Dean, Gordon S Lang School of Business and Economics pulled in $314,428.34 and collected a taxable benefit of $1,624.68.
  • Truong Nguyen, Guelph General Hospital pathologist, made $309,582.17 with no taxable benefit.
  • Paul Hebert, University Of Guelph professor, director and Canada research chair took in $299,801.01 with no taxable benefit. 
  • David Wormald, St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph president, made $299,586.51 with a taxable benefit of $11,315.28.
  • Gwen Chapman, University Of Guelph provost and vice-president academic made $299,024.52 with a taxable benefit of $2,521.92.

Known as the Sunshine List, the province annually releases details about public sector workers who are paid $100,000 or more the previous year. The complete searchable list can be found here.

Other notable earners on the list provincially included the highest earner, Ontario Power Generation's CEO, Kenneth Hartwick, making $1,628,246, followed by Dominique Miniere, an executive vice-president also at OPG, earning $1,523,518.84 and Kevin Smith, president and CEO of the University Health Network, with $845,092.20.
