St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph has been recognized for its outstanding care of geriatric patients.

In what is considered the “Oscars” of geriatric healthcare services, St. Joseph’s was honored with the 2016 Service Award in Geriatric Excellence in the organization category for their quality work with older adults.

“St. Joe’s is a special place of care and our work extends beyond our walls,” said David Wormald, President of St. Joseph’s Health Centre. “Our mission and philosophy of care is founded on the legacy of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton. I am tremendously proud and grateful for our amazing staff, physicians, and volunteers who demonstrate their leadership, fidelity, and compassionate care each and every day for those we are privileged to serve.”

St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph is the lead organization for Geriatric Services in Waterloo Wellington.

The award is a recognition for being highly responsive to the needs of seniors; providing a high-level and broad range of services to seniors and their families; demonstrating coordination and linkage with other services; demonstrating dedication, leadership, and innovation; and using best practices.

“It’s an honor to work within an organization that, together with our community partners, continually strives to provide the best possible care to each unique individual,” said Matilda Kress, Director of Outreach Services at St. Joseph’s who was nominated individually for the Saint Elizabeth Executive/Senior Leadership Award.

In addition to this win in the organization category, St. Joseph’s had multiple teams and individual employees nominated in three of five other award categories in recognition of exemplary service and outstanding contributions to the health, independence, and quality of life for seniors.

A total of 56 nominations were received from six regions across Southern Ontario (Hamilton, Niagara, Haldimand-Norfolk, Waterloo, Wellington-Dufferin, and Halton). The awards were presented May 13 in Niagara Falls.

About SAGE

The Service Awards for Geriatric Excellence (SAGE) is an annual award hosted by the Regional Geriatric Program central.

This year, the 13th annual awards gala, referred to in fun by those in the sector as the ‘Oscars’ of geriatric services, was held at the Crowne Plaza Niagara Falls in Niagara Falls, Ontario on Friday, May 13.

SAGE is a unique program that celebrates the outstanding contributions of individuals and organizations committed to providing the highest quality of care to older adults in our communities to ensure they can age with optimal health, independence, and dignity.

About St. Joseph’s

St. Joseph's Health Centre has been serving the Guelph and Wellington community since the day it first opened its doors as a refuge for the sick, the injured, the frail and the indigent in 1861.

Today, they are Guelph's leading, fully-accredited, not-for-profit provider of resident long-term care, complex continuing care, and rehabilitation services.

They also offer excellent community outreach services for people who live in their own homes but need a little assistance in their day-to- day lives because of dementia-related conditions, injury (including an acquired brain injury), frailty, or problems associated with isolation.

In addition, St. Joseph's out-patient clinics offer a range of services in the areas of geriatrics, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech/language pathology, rheumatology, physiatry, and bone densitometry.
