Work begins next week on Guelph's first bicycle signals

Three intersections will have bike signals installed and expected to be ready to use by the end of the month

Construction is set to begin next week on a Guelph first.

The city is expected to begin installing its first bike signal intersection at the intersection of College Avenue West and Vanier Drive.

"Once the work gets started, it shouldn't take too long to get the equipment required installed," said Paul Hutchison, supervisor with the traffic engineering department at the city.

"We're giving a range of a two week period, but the work might be done sooner than that, just depends on weather and a variety of other factors."

It's one of three bike signals expected to be installed and ready to use by the end of the month.

There will also be signals going up at the intersection of Woodlawn and Arrow roads, as well as Stone and Gordon, with work on those two starting up in the next couple weeks.

For those unfamiliar with a bike signal, it looks just like a regular traffic light, but clearly marked for bikes.

"The button will be pushed by a pedestrian or cyclist, and it will change the signal indication on the main street on College to red, and provide a green signal for the cyclist, a walk hand for a pedestrian," said Hutchison.

"The bike signal will sequence through just like a traffic signal."

Hutchison said the existence of crossride lanes, which are dedicated bike lanes beside pedestrian lines at an intersection, facilitates the need for these lights.
