Wyndham closed for underground work

Block of main downtown artery closed for two weeks

Infrastructure work on Wyndham Street N. in the heart of downtown Guelph is on. The work involves site servicing upgrades for the historic Petrie Building, Guelph's manager of technical services Joe de Koning said Monday.

The initial project schedule was delayed due to conflicts related to telecommunications and hydro electricity structures under the road, he added.

The installation of water and sewer pipes at the Petrie location between Macdonell and Cork appeared to be ready to start back on June 21. The block was closed at that time, but the work was quickly halted.

As of Monday, the road was blocked again. A backhoe is scraping off the asphalt and a trench is being dug across the width of the street.

Weather permitting, the project is scheduled to take about two weeks to complete. J.G. Goetz Construction is the City of Guelph’s contractor on the work, which is all happening on city property.

A detour route has been established via Macdonell and Woolwich Street, and construction will happen between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

City services, including waste collection, will not be affected by the work. Carts should continue to be put out according to the regular pickup schedule.

Pedestrians will have to get through the construction zone on the west side sidewalk, since the east side will be blocked. The west side sidewalk will remain accessible throughout the construction period.

Meanwhile, a stretch of York Road from Wyndham Street S. around to Ontario Street is now closed and will remain so for about three months, as ongoing infrastructure renewal work proceeds. Local access will be maintained.
