'Yoga will pacify your mind'

Small event raises money for Canadian Red Cross Spring Flood Relief

A small but earnest group of yoga enthusiasts gathered at Market Square on Saturday.

Organized by the Hindu Society of Guelph, Yoga For Charity raised money for the Canadian Red Cross Spring Flood Appeal through donations.

Jayanta Das, a guru in the practice of Ananda Yoga visiting from India, led the free event.

Cool temperatures and strong winds that whipped the provided yoga mats in all directions limited attendance at the event to roughly 15.

"We have to centre the mind," Das told those gathered.

"Above all, stress, stress, stress. Everywhere - every part of the globe - one problem is common: stress, stress, stress," he said, adding that yoga will remove that stress.

He said yoga means "to work for others" and to work "for the side of humanity."

"Yoga will pacify your mind because the mind is restless," he said.

Das, who also goes by the name Sri Ananda Ji, has been holding yoga and speaking sessions in the area. He is returning to India at the end of the month.
