The Guelph Gryphons suffered a huge upset at the hands of the Windsor Lancers in Windsor Monday afternoon.

The Lancers downed the sixth-ranked Gryphs 33-29.

Both teams are now 1-1 on the season.

Guelph led early on a 22-yard touchdown pass from James Roberts to Colton Jones.

A Gabe Ferraro field goal and a four-yard run by Jamal Hooker had Guelph up 20-17 in the third quarter before Windsor tailback Tarrence Crawford put Windsor out front on a two-yard run. They went up 33-21 on a 54-yard reception from Noah Akharoh with 6:41

A Thomas Bresciani touchdown reception made it a 33-27 game, but a conceded safety was the only scoring play after that.

Guelph had two glorious chances to tie the game but a touchdown run was called back on a holding call and Jamal Hooker fumbled on the Windsor 11 yard line late in the fourth.

Guelph played the game without star running back Johnny Augustine, who was injured in the season opener a week ago.

Guelph had 533 yards in total offence on the day, but was burned by 100 yard in penalties.

Gryphon quarterback James Roberts threw a pair of touchdowns and two interceptions on the day, completing 31 of 47 passes for 362 yards.

Daniel Palmer-Salmon led Guelph in rushing with 113 yards. Top receiver was Ryan Nieuwesteeg with 12 receptions for 139 yards.

Linebacker Luke Korol led the defensive unit with 10.5 tackles on the day and an interception.

Guelph wasn't the only ranked team to be upset on the weekend as the fourth-ranked Western Mustangs lost to the Carleton Ravens on Sunday.

The Gryphons host Queen's Saturday at 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
