A local soccer player has been selected to compete on the world stage.

Guelph's Maya Ladhani will don the Team Canada jersey, one of 21 women picked to represent their country at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Costa Rica next month.

Ladhani is previously a midfielder for Naestved HG, a professional team in Denmark and currently plays for a first division team in Norway called Avaldsnes IL.

The 19-year-old has represented Canada a number of times before, winning a silver medal at the CONCACAF Girls' U-15 Championship in 2016 and a bronze medal in the CONCACAF Women's U-17 Championship in 2018.

The tournament runs August 10 to 28. Canada will compete against the Korea Republic, France and Nigeria in the group stage.

The tournament's 2020 edition was eventually cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
