Guelph Royals pummelled in Welland

Lose 20-2 to first-place Welland; will host Brantford on Saturday night

WELLAND – Sam Cawker went 4-for-6 with two RBI and four runs in Welland’s 20-2 win Thursday night over Guelph.

James Smibert had three hits, including a solo home run, two RBI and three runs, Gianfranco Morello drove in a run and scored, Mattingly Romanin had two hits and three RBI, Ethan Hunt added two hits, two runs and an RBI, Matt Hilderbrandt went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run, Zarley Cina had three hits, two RBI and a run, Tyler Dupuis had two hits, four RBI and two runs and Matt Hilderbrandt drove in two on two hits.

Jake Harford earned the win on the mound, allowing an earned run on four hits. He walked two and struck out seven as he went 8-0.

Emilis Guerrero allowed eight runs on 13 hits with a strikeout over 13 innings. Darius Barlas drove in both Royals’ runs. Conner Morro had two hits.

Guelph is in third place in the Intercounty Baseball League standings with a 15-9 record. Welland is in first at 19-6.

Guelph hosts cellar-dwelling Brantford on Saturday at Hastings Stadium in a 7:30 p.m. start. On Sunday night they play in Barrie.
