Guelph Storm defenceman Michael Buchinger is scheduled to undergo surgery on an injured thumb this week and will be out of action from six to eight weeks.

The injury occurred Dec. 18, the final game before the Christmas break, against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

An x-ray and CT scan done at the time didn't reveal the damage and Buchinger had been playing with a brace since then, including Friday night when he scored a goal in Guelph's 5-3 win over Flint.

But general manager George Burnett said an MRI in the last few days revealed a torn tendon.

The surgery will take place in St. Louis. Buchinger is a St. Louis Blues draft pick.

Burnett said a speedy recovery is hoped for so Buchinger can return late in the season.

The regular season ends March 24.

Buchinger has nine goals and 30 assists in 40 games this season.
