PETERBOROUGH — Pavel Gogolev came back to haunt his old team Saturday night as the Guelph Storm opened the second half of its season with a 3-2 overtime win over the Peterborough Petes.
Gogolev, acquired last season as part of a package for Ryan Merkley, scored on a breakaway 12 seconds into overtime to give Guelph the win.
After a scoreless first period the Storm took a 2-1 lead in the second on goals by Cam Hillis and Keegan Stevenson. Peterborough's Zach Gallant forced overtime with a goal at 4:33 of the third period.
Storm netminder Owen Bennett had an excellent game, making 42 saves.
The win keeps the Storm tied for first in the Western Conference with the Saginaw Spirit, with Guelph having two games in hand.
The Storm hosts the Hamilton Bulldogs Sunday night in a 7 p.m. start at the Sleeman Centre.
