Guelph Storm turns in great effort in overtime loss to Owen Sound

Givani Smith's hat trick not quite enough in Saturday night thriller

OWEN SOUND - A dominant performance by Givani Smith wasn’t quite enough for the Guelph Storm Saturday night.

Smith had a hat trick and was a force all evening for the Storm, but so was the Owen Sound Attack’s Nick Suzuki.

Suzuki’s third goal of the game 3:14 into overtime handed the Storm a 6-5 loss at the Bayshore Community Centre.

A turnover at the Owen Sound blueline led to an odd-man rush down the ice. Guelph netminder Liam Herbst made two saves but the third shot beat him to put an end to a thoroughly entertaining hockey game.

“It’s always disappointing in overtime, regardless of how you got there,” Storm coach Jarrod Skalde said.

“From my perspective, there were times where (Owen Sound) looked like they were taking over the game, they had a lot of puck possession, but we didn’t break. We bent a little bit but we kept responding,” Skalde said.

Twice in the third period the Storm battled back to tie the game, once on a Barret Kirwin wrister with 2:04 left in the third, and then after the Attack’s Cordell James put his team ahead, Smith scored off the rush with four seconds on the clock to force overtime.

“Definitely one of my better games of the year,” said Smith. “I don’t normally score goals like that but things were going my way. Right place at the right time.

“It just shows what things will be like when guys get more experience in the league. I think we kind of deserved to win that one,” Smith said.

Nate Schnarr had the other Storm goal.

Garrett McFadden returned to the lineup after serving his eight-game suspension and had two assists.

Anthony Popovich started in net for Guelph and allowed two goals in the first period, one from a bad angle and the other when he made a bad play handling the puck behind his own net.

That was the enough for Skalde, who put Herbst in to start the third period. The overager played well the rest of the way, including stopping Suzuki on a penalty shot in overtime.

“I didn’t think he was feeling it,” Skalde said of Popovich. “I thought it was the right time to make the change.”

Guelph plays in London on Thursday. Friday they’re home to Saginaw.
