Longtime assistant coach Cory Hector is the new head coach of the University of Guelph men's varsity rugby program.

Hector takes over the head coaching duties from the OUA's reigning Coach of the Year, Darrell Devine, who is stepping aside for increasing family and work commitments after nine seasons in charge of the Gryphons.

Hector, 32, spent a total of four seasons playing varsity rugby for the Gryphons and was named a team captain during his senior season in the fall of 2008.

The Cambridge native has been as assistant coach for the past eight seasons.

Devine, who was named OUA Coach of the Year on three different occasions during his tenure, is expected to stay on the staff as an assistant.

Aside from his coaching experience at the university level, Cory Hector has also been heavily involved in coaching at the provincial, club and high school levels as well. With Rugby Ontario, Hector has served as an assistant coach with several different age groups ranging from U16 to U19. This past off-season, Hector's U18 Ontario squad were cup finalists in Vancouver.
