Russian winger signs with Storm, selected 54th overall in import draft

Storm general manager and head coach George Burnett announced on Tuesday that forward Valentin Zhugin has committed to an OHL standard player agreement with the hockey club.

The 5’11, 185 lbs left-handed Russian winger was selected by the Storm in the first round, 54th overall, in this year’s CHL Import Draft.

“We are excited to have Valentin join our organization,” said Burnett. “He has shown the ability to create offense and play effectively competing against older players in Russia’s top junior league.”

Zhugin recorded an impressive 28 goals, 26 assists, 54 points, and 20 PIMs in 32 games in 2019-20 campaign for the Metallurg Magnitogorsk U16 team. In 2020-21, the 2004-born Zhugin played for Magnitogorsk Stalnye Lisy in the MHL where he put up 10 goals, 15 assists, 25 points, and 12 PIMs in 44 games.

“I’m very happy to sign an agreement with the Guelph Storm hockey club,” said Zhugin. “I believe this is the best place for my development and I look forward to helping our organization compete for a championship in the near future.”
