York United FC signs Colombian attacking midfielder Sebastian Gutierrez

TORONTO — York United FC has signed Colombian attacking midfielder Sebastian Gutierrez.

The 23-year-old, the first signing since the CPL team rebranded from York 9 FC, has agreed to a deal through 2021 with options for two more years.

Gutierrez started at Club Patriotas in Colombia's top tier, making is mark when he arrived at Llaneros, in the second tier in 2018. He collected 10 goals in 49 appearances.

York previously signed Argentine forward Lisandro Cabrera, who also has experience in the Colombian league.

"The Colombian market is one that we have looked at in some depth this off-season," York managing partner Angus McNab said in a statement. "I feel that it offers phenomenal value and there are a larger proportion of young talents that would be realistic targets for us in both the first and second divisions than in other competitions in South America.

"Sebastian's experience, having logged over 3,000 minutes in Colombia, was very attractive and impressive given he has only just turned 23."
