Guelph Police Service increased their presence on Chancellor's Way on Saturday and issued several tickets.

A Guelph police report on last Saturday party on Chancellor's way puts the price tag on the additional resources needed by police at $30,000 for that event alone.

It also says seven people were taken to hospital for reasons ranging from extreme intoxication to being hit by thrown beer bottles. One man was arrested.

The report also says beer bottles were thrown, including one at officers, vehicles were damaged and at one point a group surrounded a police cruiser and started banging on it and yelling at the officers inside.

The report says that from 10 a.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday, police and city bylaw officers attended more than 310 calls – roughly one call every three and a half minutes.

A typical 24-hour period sees approximately 200 calls for service across the entire city.

Of the over 310 calls for service, more than 50 involved  noise complaints and 29 incidents involved  open liquor outdoors.  These resulted in numerous fines for those hosting gatherings, attending gatherings, and consuming alcohol outside private residences and licensed establishments. Other fines handed out covered offences such as public urination and being intoxicated in a public place, the police report said.

During this 17-hour timeframe, a large unsanctioned street party, attended by hundreds of young adults, took place on Chancellors Way near Edinburgh Road South        .

Police said even though there was a large police presence, there were plenty of issues on Chancellor's Way, including the "constant throwing of beer bottles."

"At one point a beer bottle was thrown out of an apartment window at police. The bottle landed on a police cruiser, approximately a foot away from where two officers were standing. Thankfully neither officer was injured and the cruiser was not damaged. Unfortunately, police were not able to identify the person who threw the bottle.

"The street party resulted in seven people being transported to the Guelph General Hospital for medical issues ranging from extreme intoxication to being struck by beer bottles thrown within the crowd."

A 19-year-old Mississauga male was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose after police say he pointed a lit Roman candle-type firework and pointed it at people as the firework discharged toward them.

There were no injuries reported.

"At another point during the event, a large crowd surrounded a Guelph Police Service cruiser with officers inside. Members of the crowd began banging on the windows and hood of the cruiser while yelling and screaming. Luckily, there were no injuries to the officers or any property damage resulting from this incident.

Police acknowledge that most of those in attendance on Chancellor's Way were respectful to each other and to first responders.
