A senior Guelph woman reportedly used a second set of keys to drive away from a licenced establishment after staff “removed” her first set in an effort to prevent her from getting behind the wheel.

She’s one of two people stopped by police and charged with impaired driving in the city this past weekend. The other is a 23-year-old Guelph man.

In addition to charges, both drivers saw their licence automatically suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded for a week.

As explained in a police news release, staff at a licenced established called police at about 7:45 p.m. on Sunday to report a potentially impaired driver. They reported having “removed” a woman’s keys and offering to call her a taxi, when she produced a second set of vehicle keys and drove off.

Officers spotted the suspect vehicle near the owner’s residence and a traffic stop was conducted. The woman failed a roadside screening device test and was taken to the police station for further testing, which reportedly indicated she had more than the legal level of alcohol in her blood.

A 67-year-old Guelph woman is charged with impaired driving.

In a separate incident, at about 7:40 p.m. on Saturday, police spotted a vehicle travelling at a “high rate of speed” on Victoria Road North, near Woodlawn Road East. During a subsequent traffic stop, police “detected a strong odour of alcoholic beverage” on the driver’s breath.

An open can of beer and marijuana were also seen inside the vehicle.

The driver failed a roadside screening test and was taken to the police station for further testing, which reportedly confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 23-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving, driving while suspended and several provincial offences.
