Alleged shoplifter charged with punching employee trying to stop her

A Guelph woman faces a robbery charge after an employee of a north-end business was assaulted while trying to stop a shoplifter.

Saturday evening, an employee of a Woodlawn Road West business observed a woman concealing items in her purse and followed her as she attempted to leave the store. He stopped her as she was about to exit, but the woman punched him several times and fled on foot. The employee was not injured.

Officers located her walking nearby and placed her under arrest. A search of her property revealed approximately $170 worth of stolen property in her backpack.

A 47-year-old Guelph woman is charged with robbery. She will appear in court June 7.
