The Office of the Attorney General has confirmed criminal charges against Paul Currie have been withdrawn.

Currie, who serves as the senior justice of the province's central west region, including Guelph, was charged with assault and assault causing bodily harm in April.

In an email to GuelphToday, a spokesperson for the Attorney General's office said it did not get involved in any of the prosecutorial decisions, and a Crown attorney from British Columbia was retained.

The spokesperson added the independent out-of-province prosecutor withdrew the charges.

In an email, a ministry spokesperson said: "The ministry retains outside counsel on a case-by-case basis when the administration of justice and public confidence in the administration of justice requires it. In this case, a prosecutor from British Columbia handled all decisions regarding the prosecution and accordingly the ministry was not involved in any of the prosecutorial decisions. On June 20, 2023, the independent out-of-province prosecutor withdrew the charges of assault and assault causing bodily harm against the accused, Paul Currie. The independent prosecutor placed his reasons on the record for withdrawing the charges."

A request for comment from Crown attorney Simon Thomson was redirected to the office of the attorney general.

It's not known if Currie has been able to resume judicial or administrative duties.
