An 18-year-old British Columbia man has been arrested in relation to inappropriate contact with a Guelph child, Guelph police report.

Last October, the Guelph Police Service Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit began an investigation into a local 12-year-old girl being exploited for intimate videos and images by an unknown person on the social media platform Snapchat.

With the assistance of the US Department of Homeland Security, information was obtained from the social media platform about this unknown person. Further investigation found the person was residing at the University of British Columbia.

Information was passed on to the RCMP in British Columbia. This week a search warrant was executed at UBC and a male student was arrested. He was released to appear in court later this month.

The exact charge laid was not immediately known.
