North end roads reopen after package investigation ends (UPDATED)

Major traffic delays in area of Woodlawn Road West for investigation at Canada Post distribution centre

Police are re-opening several north end roads, including a section of Woodlawn Road, following an investigation into a suspicious package on Tuesday morning.

The closure lasted nearly three hours.

"The contents (of the suspicious package) never presented a risk to the public, however it was packaged in a way that it could have been mistaken for an explosive," wrote Guelph police spokesperson Scott Tracey in an email to GuelphToday. "As always in these circumstances we utilized an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of the community."

Several roads are closed and there is a large police presence in the city's north end.

Police say they are investigating a suspicious package at the main Canada Post distribution centre on Woodlawn Road West.

Businesses for a 300 metre radius have been evacuated. Roughly 24 Canada Post employees are currently gathered in the parking lot of the Splittsville bowling alley on Woodlawn. Access to the plaza is only possible from the north.

It is believed the bomb squad is coming over from Waterloo Regional Police.

Police tweeted around 8:45 a.m. that Woodlawn Road West is closed from Dawson Road to the Hanlon Expressway, Silvercreek Parkway is closed from Campbell Road to Fair Road and Fair Road is closed from Silvercreek Parkway to Arrow Road.

The Hanlon Expressway is open and vehicles can turn west on Woodlawn, heading to Kitchener, but cannot exit onto Woodlawn heading east.

Police say several businesses in the area have been evacuated.

Sidewalks in that area are also closed.

There are several major traffic delays in the area.

No further details were immediately available.
