Police found a two-year-old girl sleeping safely after being left alone in a Downtown area apartment, with the door unlocked, Sunday morning.

Officers pulled over a vehicle in the area of Woolwich Street and Woodlawn Road East at about 8:35 a.m. after a query of the licence plate revealed an arrest warrant had been issued for the owner, explains a Guelph Police Service news release.

Upon investigation, police discovered the man behind the wheel to be a prohibited driver. A subsequent search of the vehicle also turned up an opioid tablet in the console, police noted.

While seated in the cruiser, the man reportedly told police about his daughter being left alone, prompting police to check on the girl, who was found unharmed and turned over into the custody of a relative.

The accused is charged with driving while suspended, possession of a controlled substance and abandoning a child.
