What began as an investigation into a rollover collision Saturday by Guelph police ended up with several other charges for two Guelph men.

Police say that at approximately 8:20 p.m. they attended to a collision in front of Paisley Road Public School.

Investigation determined an SUV had struck a curb, gone airborne and rolled once before striking a tree and coming to rest. Two males were trapped inside and had to be extricated from the vehicle. Both sustained minor injuries.

The driver was showing signs of impairment and was arrested for impaired driving. He was transported to Guelph General Hospital, where breath tests reportedly confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A search of the vehicle during the collision investigation revealed a set of brass knuckles.

A 28-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired operation, dangerous operation, possession of a prohibited weapon and several Highway Traffic Act offences. His driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days.

As a results of their investigation, officers learned the two males had allegedly been involved in an assault call a short distance away just before the collision. Two males had attended an address on Willow Road and caused approximately $300 damage by repeatedly kicking an apartment door. They then went outside and both assaulted an adult male without provocation. The victim did not require medical attention.

The driver and his passenger, a 40-year-old Guelph male, are both charged with assault and mischief. Both will appear in a Guelph court Dec. 7.
