Some time on Nov. 2, 2019, three counterfeit $100 bills were used at different stores in the Stone Road Mall in the City of Guelph. The bills were discovered as counterfeit when they were deposited in the bank.

There is currently concern that more businesses might unknowingly be in possession of other counterfeit bills if they have not yet tried to deposit them in a bank.

The Guelph Police Service would like to remind business owners to be vigilant in inspecting the current bills they possess and all bills they receive in the future. To spot fake bills, the Bank of Canada suggests the “touch and tilt” method. Touch the bills to feel for a raised surface, and then tilt it side to side to see if the security features are engaging. A transparent window will contain those important features.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Sergeant Mark Pettapiece at 519 824 1212 ext. 7506, email him at [email protected], leave an anonymous tip at Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submit an anonymous tip online.
