Criminal charges have been upgraded against a Kitchener male involved in a collision earlier this month which left a teenage girl in hospital with serious injuries.

On May 15, shortly after 8 p.m., a white Cadillac and dark-coloured BMW were racing northbound on Woolwich Street. Near the intersection of Powell Street the Cadillac, which was driving in the southbound lane, collided head-on with a southbound Volkswagen.

A teenage passenger in the Volkswagen was initially transported to Guelph General Hospital following the collision. The driver of the Cadillac, a 26-year-old Kitchener male, was arrested at the scene for dangerous driving as well as drug charges and later released from the police station.

Several hours after the collision, investigators learned the teen’s injuries were much more serious than originally believed. She was transported to a Hamilton trauma centre where she remains in stable condition. She has undergone two surgeries and is awaiting a third.

On Tuesday morning the Kitchener male was rearrested for criminal negligence causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and racing a motor vehicle. The drug charges are also still before the court. The male was held for a bail hearing Tuesday and released with a court date of Sept. 3.

The driver of the BMW was arrested six days after the collision and is also charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and racing a motor vehicle. A 19-year-old Puslinch male was released on bail and will appear in a Guelph court June 18.
