A Guelph male was arrested Thursday, more than a year after leaving his DNA inside a stolen motor vehicle.

On March 23, 2020, a Toyota motor vehicle was taken from an address in the city’s east end. It was located abandoned in the downtown area one week later. Several items were seized during an examination of the recovered vehicle and sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences for analysis.

Earlier this month, one of the samples was matched to a male on the National DNA Databank. The owner of the vehicle confirmed he does not know that male and there is no reason his DNA should have been inside.

On Thursday afternoon the male was located at an address downtown and arrested.

A 38-year-old Guelph male is charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, being an occupant of a stolen motor vehicle and breaching probation. He will appear in a Guelph court Sept. 24.
