Attempting to avoid a trespassing ticket led to criminal charges for a Guelph man who attempted to punch a police officer.

Approximately 3:15 p.m. Sunday a police officer was on foot patrol downtown when he spotted a man entering a business and knew him to be banned. The officer escorted the man from the business and intended to issue a ticket under the Trespass to Property Act.

The man became irate and tried to walk away. When the officer tried to stop him the man turned and attempted to punch the officer in the head. He was taken to the ground and arrested.

A 28-year-old man is charged with assaulting police and two counts of breaching a probation order.
