A Guelph male faces several charges after a suspected impaired driver fled police and then crashed Monday morning.
Just before 8 a.m., police were notified of a possible impaired driver on Victoria Road North. The caller advised a pickup was being driven erratically and ran a red light at Eastview Road. An officer saw the pickup stopped at a green light at Eramosa Road.
The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver accelerated to more than 100 km/h in a 50 km/h zone and almost immediately lost control, striking a flatbed truck which was stopped in the northbound lane of Victoria Road North. The pickup truck continued on but was stopped a short distance away. There were no injuries reported.
The driver was showing signs of impaired driving and was arrested. A search incident to arrest revealed a number of Oxycodone and Xanax tablets in the driver’s area of the pickup.
A 36-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired operation, dangerous operation, flight from police, stunt driving and possessing a controlled substance. He will appear in a Guelph court March 22.
