Driver not old enough to drink charged with impaired following collision

An Oakville male not old enough to legally drink faces impaired driving charges following a collision in Guelph early Saturday.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Guelph police were called to a collision at Stone Road East and Victoria Road South. Investigation revealed a car travelling east on Stone Road drove through a red light, colliding with a pickup truck. The driver of the car was standing outside when officers arrived and was observed to be unsteady on his feet and fumbling with his wallet. A strong odour of alcoholic beverage was detected on his breath.

The male was arrested and breath tests at the police station revealed he had twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system. An 18-year-old is charged with impaired driving, impaired driving – blood alcohol concentration, failing to stop at a red light, novice driver having blood alcohol concentration above zero and consuming liquor underage.

His driver’s license was immediately suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days. No injuries were reported in the collision. The male will appear in a Guelph court March 26.
